Gary was born in Auburn, Placer County, California to the late Charles Ambrose Mumper and Julia Ann "Judy" Neudorff. The family moved from Central Hollywood, in Los Angeles, to Anaheim, in Orange County in 1950. This small city in a post WW2 boom era of expansive growth and development in Southern California and in a pre-Disneyland state. He graduated from Anaheim Union High School. During the mid-60s Gary served in the United States Army & the Army Reserves. After his service in the military, he attended Cal State Long Beach for his undergraduate degree and UC Berkeley for his postgraduate studies. Gary, was a Physical Therapist in Fresno, CA for 40+ years. For over 30 years Gary was a Lector at Sunday Masses at St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Fresno. Genealogy was one of his interests. As a Find-A-Grave volunteer, Gary (RowWalker) was a member for about 23 1/2 years & added 17,771 memorials and managed 17,794 memorials. It wasn't unusual to see Gary taking photographs of headstones for the many memorials he created on the Find-A-Grave website. He was predecessed by his parents and a brother, William "Bill" Mumper. He is survived by his wife, Shirley; son Cameron (Tiffany) Kostigen-Mumper and three daughters, Kimberly Mumper, Halley Mumper and Ailis (Max) Mumper-Garcia & 3 grandchildren: Graham Kostigen-Mumper, Skylar Kostigen-Mumper and Violet Mumper-Garcia. He is also servived by his brothers Ken (Cathy) Mumper and Bruce (Lorna) Mumper; Sister-in-law Chris Mumper and numerous nephews and nieces.

Gary was an 8th generation descendant of German immigrants (Georg Michael and Anna Margaretha) who settled in Pennsylvania in 1750. The vast majority of Mumpers, listed here at FindAGrave and otherwise residing in the United States, consider Georg Michael to be their common patriarch. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Friday, January 31, at St. Teresa Catholic Church, in Fresno, CA
